1.0 (dual) hour - The attorney-client privilege shields certain communications between a lawyer and client relating to legal representation. But a lawyer’s duty to maintain confidentiality is far broader than merely preserving the privilege. Learn about the difference between those two critical obligations and discover the myriads of exceptions that apply to both. Become familiar with the steps needed to be taken to avoid ethics and other problems if client information is wrongly disseminated. In addition, a summary of significant recent trends in lawyer regulation will also be featured.

We will discuss child development, adverse childhood experiences and how trauma affects development.  The session will focus on the ethics of representing youth in several areas, such as competency and brain development, the balance between rehabilitation and punishment, the use of diversion, systemic racial bias, and the lifelong harm caused by transferring youth to the adult criminal system.
