CAPE VERDE LAWYER IMMEDIATELY SUSPENDED
The law license of William L. Embry, of Sal-Rei Boa Vista, Republic of Cape Verde in West Africa, was
immediately suspended by order of the Tennessee Supreme Court filed December 10, 2001. Embry, formerly of
Memphis, willfully and intentionally failed to pay his child support obligation while at all times having the ability to pay,
according to a January 25, 2000 order of the Shelby County Circuit Court. This January, 2000 order entered by the
Circuit Court adjudged Embry to be $54,749.00 in arrears as to his child support obligation and attorney fees owed
the mother in the nature of child support.
Section 31.1 of Tennessee Supreme Court Rule 9 sets forth that the Supreme Court will immediately
suspend any lawyer who willfully refuses to comply with the terms of a court order to which the lawyer is a party,
upon presentation of a certified copy of such order.
On December 20, 2001, the Shelby County Circuit Court entered an order vacating the January 25, 2000
order in its entirety. Accordingly, the Board of Professional Responsibilty presented to the Supreme Court a
proposed order to dissolve the immediate suspension, due to the Circuit Courtâs latest action.
