Public censure on June 1, 1987. He represented the estate of a Tennessee decedent who had
owned land in Virginia. Some of the 12 heirs to the estate approached Stanifer to handle the sale
of the Virginia land. He suggested that they give him power of attorney and circulated a sample
power of attorney form to the heirs. He received powers of attorney, purportedly signed by all of
the heirs. By his own admission, he, as a notary public, signed the notary statement at the end of
some of the powers of attorney, that the statements were "sworn to and subscribed before me ...."
He stated he did this as an accommodation to the heirs and acknowledged that these heirs did not
appear before him.
