KNOX COUNTY LAWYER SUSPENDED
On May 13, 2008, the Supreme Court of Tennessee suspended Carleton E. Bryant, of Knoxville,
Tennessee, from the practice of law for six (6) months, with all time suspended but with Mr. Bryant being on
probation during the six-month period subject to certain conditions. Further, Mr. Bryant must attend and
successfully complete six (6) hours of continuing legal education in ethics. He must not have another
meritorious disciplinary complaint filed against him during the probationary period. Mr. Bryant must not
engage in private practice that presents a potential conflict of interest with his representation of the Knox
County Sheriffâs Department. Mr. Bryant is required to pay the costs of the disciplinary proceedings.
Carleton E. Bryant violated disciplinary rules by representing clients who had a conflict of interest with
an existing client, negligently allowing an employee to file a pleading with no merit, and negligently signing a
document that contained factual misrepresentations. His actions violate the following Disciplinary Rules:
DR 1-102 (Misconduct), DR 2-103 (Recommendation of Professional Employment), DR 5-101 and 5-105
(Refusing Employment When the Interests of the Lawyer May Impair Independent Professional Judgment),
DR 7-102 (Representing a Client within the Bounds of the Law), DR 7-104 (Communicating with One of
Adverse Interest), and DR 7-106 (Trial Conduct).
