DAVIDSON COUNTY LAWYER CENSURED
On November 6, 2012, Hugh Edward Garrett, an attorney licensed to practice law in Tennessee,
received a Public Censure from the Board of Professional Responsibility of the Tennessee Supreme Court.
Mr. Garrett failed to render competent representation, failed to act with reasonable diligence, failed to
maintain reasonable communication with his client, and failed to take reasonable steps to expedite litigation.
Mr. Garrett essentially abandoned his clientâs case on appeal, ignoring the requests of the Court of Criminal
Appeals to either file a brief or dismiss the matter.
By these acts, Mr. Garrett has violated Rules of Professional Conduct 1.1 (competence), 1.3 (diligence),
1.4 (communication), 3.2 (expediting litigation), and 8.4(d) (misconduct) and is hereby Publicly Censured for
these violations.
A Public Censure is a rebuke and warning to the attorney, but it does not affect the attorneyâs ability to
practice law.
