FORMER JOHNSON CITY LAWYER CENSURED
On May 7, 2007, the Board of Professional Responsibility issued a Public Censure as to Michael T.
Meehan, an attorney who formerly practiced law in Johnson City, Tennessee.
The Respondent, practicing out of his home in Johnson City, was appointed to several criminal cases. In
March 2006, Respondent abruptly moved to Arizona. He failed to appear at several court hearings regarding
his client. On April 6, 2006, Respondent did not appear in court with a local woman charged with six counts of
failure to report the rape of a child. Her husband was accused of the rape. The court had mailed Respondent a
letter to which he did not respond. The court then issued a warrant to arrest Respondent on the charge of
contempt. Respondent retained counsel. Respondent pled guilty, paid the fine and costs, and reimbursed his
clients their fees.
The Board found that Mr. Meehan violated Rules of Professional Conduct 1.3 and 8.4(d).
This censure was issued pursuant to Rule 9, Rules of the Supreme Court of Tennessee. This censure
does not limit Mr. Meehanâs ability to continue to practice law.
