MEMPHIS LAWYER SUSPENDED
William E. Friedman, a Memphis lawyer, has been suspended from the practice of law by Order of the Supreme
Court filed October 23, 2001. The Court suspended Friedman for a period of eleven months and twenty-nine days, with all
time suspended except for 60 days actual suspension beginning August 4, 2001 and ending on October 2, 2001. The
Court found that Friedman complied with the 60 day actual suspension period.
The Court also placed Friedman on probation for the balance of the eleven months, twenty-nine day period upon
the following conditions:
1. Friedman shall have a law office practice assistance monitor who shall help Friedman in the areas of
calendaring, docket control, moving with reasonable promptness and improving his communications with
clients, and who shall make quarterly reports to Disciplinary Counsel regarding Friedmanâs progress; and
2. Friedman shall complete three hours of Continuing Legal Education in the area of time management in the
practice in the practice of law.
Friedman neglected two clientsâ personal injury cases, failed to move with reasonable diligence and promptness
and did not keep his clients reasonably informed about the status of their legal matters. Friedman has received prior
disciplinary sanctions for the same type of misconduct.
The Board of Professional Responsibility filed a petition for discipline against Friedman pursuant to Tennessee
Supreme Court Rule 9, and Friedman submitted a conditional guilty plea resulting in the eleven month, twenty-nine day
suspension.
Section 18 of Tennessee Supreme Court Rule 9 requires Friedman to notify by registered or certified mail all
clients being represented in pending matters; all co-counsel and opposing counsel of the Supreme Courtâs Order
suspending his license. The 60 day actual suspension period expired without the need for a reinstatement proceeding,
and Friedman may practice law while on probation beginning on October 23, 2001.
