MEMPHIS LAWYER SUSPENDED
On July 23, 2009, Matthew Ian John of Memphis, Tennessee, was suspended by the Tennessee Supreme
Court, pursuant to a Conditional Guilty Plea, for a period of thirty (30) days pursuant to Rule 9, Section 4.2, of
the Rules of the Supreme Court, the imposition of which is to begin on August 25, 2009.
Mr. John violated disciplinary rules by signing another lawyerâs name in his firm as a witness to a power
of attorney and failing to properly advise a client as to a conflict of interest. Mr. Johnâs actions violated
Tennessee Supreme Court Rule 8, Rules of Professional Conduct 1.7 (Conflict of Interest) and 8.4
(Misconduct).
Mr. John was furthered ordered to pay the expenses and costs of the disciplinary proceedings against
him, pursuant to Rule 9, Section 4.7, of the Rules of the Supreme Court and fully comply in all respects with the
requirements and obligations of suspended attorneys as set forth in Rule 9, Section 18.1 of the Rules of the
Supreme Court.
