SHELBY_COUNTY LAWYER CENSURED
On April 25, 2025, Marti Lee Kaufman, an attorney licensed to practice law in Tennessee, received a
Public Censure from the Board of Professional Responsibility of the Tennessee Supreme Court.
Ms. Kaufman represented a client in a car wreck matter in which the insurer for the other driver
accepted responsibility. Ms. Kaufman delayed 17 months in filing the lawsuit and then failed to properly serve
the defendant. Ms. Kaufman later entered into an agreement with the client to settle a potential malpractice
claim. In a second matter, Ms. Kaufman represented a client in a car accident matter in which she took no
action for 17 months, and then took no further action after filing a complaint. In a third matter, Ms. Kaufman
was hired to represent a client in a civil fraud matter, and she failed to take any action for 30 months. Ms.
Kaufman later refunded the clientâs retainer.
By the aforementioned acts, Marti Lee Kaufman has violated Rules of Professional Conduct 1.3
(diligence), 1.4 (communication), 3.2 (expediting litigation), and 8.4 (misconduct) and is hereby Publicly
Censured for these violations.
A Public Censure is a rebuke and warning to the attorney, but it does not affect the attorneyâs ability to
practice law.
