FORMER SPRINGFIELD ATTORNEY DISBARRED

On October 22, 2003, the Supreme Court of Tennessee entered an order
disbarring Joel B. Whitenton.

The Board of Professional Responsibility filed a petition for discipline against
Whitenton. Whitenton failed to answer this petition and on August 12, 2003, a hearing
panel issued a default judgment recommending that Whitenton be disbarred. Whitenton
failed to appeal this hearing panel’s judgment and on October 22, 2003, the Supreme
Court disbarred Whitenton.

Whitenton’s disciplinary case was held pursuant to Supreme Court Rule 8 and 9.
In Tennessee, disbarred lawyers may apply for reinstatement of their law license after
five years. To be reinstated Whitenton must show by clear and convincing evidence
that his reinstatement will not be detrimental to the integrity and standing of the bar or
the administration of justice or subversive to the public’s interest.
