October 29, 1987
Public censure on October 29, 1987. A settlement for $12,500 was reached on behalf of his
client in regard to an accident. When the check arrived, he contacted his client and the two of
them went to the bank. There, the client endorsed the check and Laws instructed the teller to
make a cashier's check to the client for $7,500 and another to him for $5,000. The client
protested that the fee was only to be one-third of the settlement. Until the client filed a
complaint, Laws failed to refund the excess to the client. When he made the refund, Laws stated
that he was not making an admission as to the amount of the fee.
