PUTNAM COUNTY LAWYER DISBARRED
On June 18, 2026, the Supreme Court of Tennessee permanently disbarred James Nathan Hargis from the
practice of law. Pursuant to Tennessee Supreme Court Rule 9, Section 23.1, Mr. Hargis delivered to the Board of
Professional Responsibility his Affidavit in Support of Permanent Disbarment by Consent affirming he could not
successfully defend himself against charges detailed in pending disciplinary File Nos. 100675-2024-4-MH-INV;
101624-2025-4-MH-INV; 101994-2026-4-TT-INV; 102014-2026-4-TT-INV; 102021-2026-4-TT-INV; 102041-
2026-4-TT-INV; and 102081-2026-4-TT-INV. Mr. Hargis misappropriated and converted client and third-party
funds in violation of Rules of Professional Conduct 8.4 (misconduct).
On April 13, 2026, the Supreme Court of Tennessee temporarily suspended James Nathan Hargis from
the practice of law upon finding that Mr. Hargis misappropriated client and third-party funds and posed a threat
of substantial harm to the public. The Order of Temporary Suspension (Case No. M2026-00517-SC-BAR-BP)
was dissolved upon entry of the June 11, 2026, Order of Enforcement.
Mr. Hargis must comply with the requirements of Tennessee Supreme Court Rule 9, Section 28 regarding
the obligations and responsibilities of disbarred attorneys and is not eligible for reinstatement to the practice of
law in this state.
