MADISON COUNTY ATTORNEY ON PROBATION
On January 30, 2013, Angela Joy Hopson, of Jackson, Tennessee, was suspended from the
practice of law by Order of the Tennessee Supreme Court for one (1) year; however, the entire
suspension is probated subject to certain conditions. Ms. Hopson must engage a practice monitor for the
period of her probation and she must comply with the Tennessee Lawyers Assistance Program. Finally,
Ms. Hopson must pay the Boardâs costs and expenses within ninety (90) days.
The Board filed a Petition for Discipline based upon two (2) complaints of misconduct. In the
first complaint, Ms. Hopson failed to properly communicate with her client, a defendant in a post-
conviction trial and appeal. The second complaint was based upon an Order by the Court of Criminal
Appeals finding Ms. Hopson in contempt for her failure to file a timely brief and to follow the prior
orders of the court regarding the filing of a status report.
Ms. Hopson violated Rules of Professional Conduct: 1.1, Competence; 1.3, Diligence, 1.4;
Communication; 3.2, Expediting Litigation; 8.1(b), Bar Admission and Disciplinary Matters; and 8.4(a),
(b), and (d), Misconduct.
Ms. Hopson must comply with the requirements of Tennessee Supreme Court Rule 9, Section
18 regarding the obligations and responsibilities of suspended attorneys.
