MEMPHIS ATTORNEY HELD IN CONTEMPT
On August 17, 2006, the Tennessee Supreme Court adjudicated Bretran R.
Thompson to be in willful contempt of the Tennessee Supreme Court based upon the Report of
the Special Master appointed by the Chief Justice of the Tennessee Supreme Court to take proof
and submit his findings to the Court.
The Board of Professional Responsibility had filed three Petitions for Contempt
against Thompson, for taking funds from potential clients with the representation that he would
practice law, when in fact he was disbarred.
The Court accepted the Report of the Special Master finding Thompson in
contempt of the January 4, 1996 Order of the Tennessee Supreme Court disbarring him from
the practice of law and Ordered that Thompson was sentenced to fifty (50) days in jail with
credit for time served in his criminal matter in Shelby County Cases No. 02-01737 and No. 02-
01853. The Court further Ordered Thompson to pay $1,250 in fines and make restitution within
six (6) months to the complainants in amounts as follows: LaShondra Boyd $700.00; Irish Felix
$1,200; Alfonzo Maddox $300; and Michael Nellums $800.
The Court further Ordered that Thompson pay the costs and expenses of the
contempt proceeding.
