GIBSON COUNTY LAWYER CENSURED

On November 14, 2025, Chad Michael Butler, an attorney licensed to practice law in Tennessee,
received a Public Censure from the Board of Professional Responsibility of the Tennessee Supreme Court.
Mr. Bulter was retained by a client to file an Emergency Custody Petition related to minor children in
her care. Subsequently, Mr. Bulter filed a Petition for Adoption and Termination of Parental Rights on behalf of
his client. In court filings in both matters, Mr. Butler indicated that the Complainant pled guilty to sexual
battery and assault and that the Complainant was a registered sex offender. Prior to both filings, Mr. Butler’s
client provided him with information claiming the Complainant had pled guilty to sexual battery and assault and
was a registered sex offender. Mr. Butler included these statements in both filings, verified by his client’s
signature. However, Mr. Butler did not independently verify these statements, and the statements were false.
By these acts, Mr. Butler has violated Rules of Professional Conduct 1.3 (diligence) and 8.4
(misconduct) and is hereby Publicly Censured for this violation.
A Public Censure is a rebuke and warning to the attorney, but it does not affect the attorney’s ability to
practice law.
